Attention, bookworms! We’ve rounded up the most exciting National Bookshop Day events in Brisbane. Here’s where to celebrate.
As part of their celebrations Dymocks Chermside will play host to children’s book author Chris Collins, who will be in the store from 9:30am for a book signing. The A Bug Called Doug author will also perform readings from his books, along with some singing, at 10am and again at 1:30pm.
There will be a “Take a Selfie with your Favourite Book” competition which will have two prizes.Adults can win $303 worth of books and young adults can win $250 worth of books. To be eligible all you have to do is take a selfie and tag the Dymocks Westfield Chermside Facebook page and the winner will be chosen by the staff. The competition will start 1 August and will be drawn on 10 August. There will also be a Guess How Many Books in the Bookshop competition. All customers have to do is buy a book on the day and take a guess.The person who get’s closest to the number by the end of the day wins a book pack worth $734.

Riverbend Books and Teahouse
Drop by Riverbend Books and Teahouse on Saturday 9 August for a jam-packed day of events and activities to celebrate National Bookshop Day. In the morning they have a special reading event for the kids. Acclaimed illustrator Lucia Masciullo will read The Wild Ones which she illustrated in collaboration with author Sonya Hartnett. She will also bring along her sketches to demonstrate what a children’s book illustrator actually does!
In the afternoon join Suzy Wilson for Bibliotherapy with Suzy at 2pm (for a 2:30pm start). Suzy will discuss some fantastic new and upcoming releases, as well as some old favourites. Throughout the day Riverbend will also be hosting a Great Book Swap to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation! Simply bring along one of your favourite or much-loved books so you can swap it for someone else’s. You can also make a donation and all the money raised will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Books can be dropped off at Riverbend Books before the day.

Avid Reader will be hive of active on Saturday 9 August! There will be music on the footpath, special offers, limited edition tote bags designed by a local artist and lots of giveaways! Brisbane authors Nick Earls and Sally Piper will be calling in to say ‘hi’ and help out behind the Avid Reader counter.
To celebrate the announcement of Australia’s Favourite Kid’s Book, the store will also be discounting children’s and young adult books by 20 per cent. So come by, grab a special National Bookshop Day special offer and have a chat about what you are reading with people who LOVE talking books!
