Its 3pm, you’re tired and in desperate need of a pick up, instead of heading down to the office vending machine for a chocolate or packet of chips – try these healthy snack ideas.
We’ve all given in to those vending machine cravings once or twice (maybe three times) before, but by stocking up your office drawers or fridge with healthy and delicious snacks those nasty cravings can be avoided!
Here are some of our healthy snack ideas for those 3pm slumps!
Roasted chickpeas are a great alternative to that nasty packet of chips.
Drain a can of chickpeas and place them on baking tray lined with baking paper. You can season them with whatever seasoning you like, try chilli and fresh lime juice or all purpose seasoning or just plain sea salt.
Once seasoned, place the chickpeas in the oven at 160˚c for about 30 minutes until crispy and golden. You can store these in your desk drawer for up to 3 days in an airtight container.
Celery (or carrot) sticks are great to munch on throughout the day if you’re feeling hungry, but if you need something to jazz them up a little, here are some great dip ideas.
Celery and nut butter is a match made in heaven! Cut some celery up into short sticks and place them in an airtight container in the office fridge. Keep your peanut or almond butter (whatever you prefer) on your desk or in your drawer and when you’re feeling hungry just dip those sticks in!! The celery should stay fresh in the fridge for up to a week.
Hummus is another great dip for celery sticks, and great to snack on during the day! You can make your own hummus – it’s basically chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice and a bit of salt whizzed up into a paste – or you can buy organic tubs at your local supermarket. Just store it in the fridge with your celery sticks!
Berry Yoghurt Snacks
Blueberries and Strawberries are a great and delicious snack throughout the day, but you know what makes them even better? Yoghurt!
Roll a handful of berries around in some natural Greek yoghurt (sweetened or plain is fine), then place the berries on tray lined with baking paper. Make sure none of the berries are touching each other (you don’t want them to clump together). Place the tray and berries in the freezer overnight, and in the morning you’ll have little yoghurt snacks to take to work!
Apple and Nut Butter Sandwich
Apple and nut butter sandwiches are an excellent little snack idea for the office and the kids can even have them too!
Don’t worry, I’m not talking about a sandwich with bread and butter – you’ll see what I mean.
Slice an apple into 1cm (or there about) thick medallions. Then, grab one slice of apple and smother one side with nut butter (almond, cashew or peanut, whatever you prefer). Grab another slice of apple and sandwich the two pieces together and there you have it!
If you want a bit of extra sweetness you could add a few dried cranberries into the nut butter or a few dark choc chips. Heaven!
Banana Ice Cream
I know what you’re thinking, ice cream isn’t healthy nor is it easy to make – but this recipe is!
Peel and slice 3 to 4 bananas and place them in a container to freeze overnight. Once frozen, pop the bananas into a blender and blend until creamy and smooth. That’s it, you’re done!
The mixture will literally turn into a smooth banana ice cream. Yum! Just keep it in the freezer at work and when you feel like something sweet, there it is!
If you want to add a little more flavour to the ice cream you could add a little bit of honey and cinnamon or berries upon serving.
There you have it, some simple snack ideas for the office sure to get rid of those nasty cravings!
