Ah, the hangover, bane of all social drinkers. What a great way to bring in the New Year – nursing a pounding headache and upset stomach.

But not to worry – with our list of hangover cures you’re sure to feel better… at the very least you might be a little distracted from your misery?

A hangover is caused by a combination of acetaldehyde (the toxic by-product of alcohol metabolism), dehydration and a depletion of vitamin A, B and C stores. That extra bottle of wine might seem like a good idea at the time, but it causes havoc with your metabolism.

Drinking clear liquors or fresh alcohols (so not that case of beer you left in the car for a week) can help reduce the impact of a hangover, but not avoid it altogether. The following remedies are tried and tested and while not always successful, you may find a cure that works for you.

1. Replenish water stores

Juice, water and sports drinks like Gatorade are great for recovering water stores. If you need to be up bright eyed and bushy-tailed the next morning, drinking Coke can both hydrate you as well as provide a much-needed caffeine hit. But don’t go overboard since caffeine will dehydrate you even further.

2. Vitamin top up

Have foods or medicine high in vitamins and minerals to help your body recover – Vegemite is great as the salt helps you recover water and also tops up your Vitamin B stores. Bananas are another great choice, helping replenish your depleted potassium stores, and are a natural antacid which will help with nausea.

3. Hair of the dog

While not exactly a cure, more of a postponement, drinking the next morning can help relieve hangover symptoms temporarily. Having a Bloody Mary will help – the tomato juice is high in Vitamin C and the celery is packed full of vitamins. The hot sauce will help motivate your metabolism, too.

4. Go a greaseball breakfast

Some studies have shown that bacon provides amino acids which help with hangovers, while eggs contain cysteine which helps to break down acetaldehyde, so why not have a fry-up in the morning. At the very least it will put something in your stomach and give you energy!

5. Medicate

Don’t suffer unnecessarily – easing a pounding headache is as easy as popping a pill. Stick to aspirin and ibuprofen and avoid paracetamol as it can damage your liver!
