It’s the right season to make your own slushies and you can make some healthy alternatives to the sugar-filled varieties writes Sarah Wiedersehn, AAP.

Concerned about your health and sugar intake? Try a homemade smoothie for yourself or give these homemade healthy slushies or slurpies a test run and avoid the sugar-filled, shop-bought Slurpee alternatives:

 

PINEAPPLE, ORANGE AND PASSIONFRUIT SLUSHIE

4 passionfruit

2 cups pineapple juice

4 oranges, juiced (to make 2 cups)

2 cups crushed ice

Strain passionfruit pulp into a jug. Discard seeds. Combine, pineapple, orange, passionfruit juice and ice in a food processor or blender. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses.

 

MANGO SLUSHIE

1 cup of frozen mango pieces

1 cup of juice (apple, orange or pineapple)

Place fruit into blender and pour in of the juice Blend until smooth. Add a little more juice if required. If the juice is too liquid, place in freezer for a few minutes, break up any ice crystals, then serve.

Note: You can replace the fruit juice with coconut water if you want to reduce the sugar content. You can also replace the mango with any frozen fruit – e.g., watermelon, rockmelon or berries.

 

ICY STRAWBERRY SLUSH

20 strawberries

4 tsp lemon juice

2 heaped tsp honey

10-12 ice cubes

Blend until smooth. Pour into 2 small cups or bowls. Get some spoons and enjoy.
