Elysium Hair Brisbane has won its third Salon of the Year hairdressing award this year – and it’s only July.

The salon was crowned Hair Expo 2016 Australian Salon of the Year just last month, following two wins (National and State) at the Australian Hair Industry Awards in March.

Co-owner, Kate Henderson says it’s a really big achievement for the team.

“It’s a highly respected award in the hair industry, so it’s a real nice thing to have,” she says.

“It’s also nice for the customers, because they know they are coming to a business that is good all-round with strong foundations and great customer service.”

Kate started Elysium Hair back in 2008 alongside her husband, Oscar. The pair had absolutely no experience in the industry, but with the support of family and friends decided to give it a go.

Kate says they just wanted to run a business with a customer focus, and then fell in love with the hairdressing industry.

“We’ve definitely fell in love with hairdressing over the last 7 years, but I think our passion comes from running a customer focus business in the past,” she says.

“Hairdressing is such a happy business to run, it’s very nice to see your clients come in then leave all happy and smiling.”

Apart from managing the team, doing reception and all the paperwork, Kate describes her role in the salon as a translator.

“I’m kind of like a translator between the technical hairdresser and the customer. Translating the technical terms into something a customer can understand,” she says.

“We don’t worry about what other salons are doing, we think about how we can better service our clients, how we can give them more of what they want and how we can solve their hair problems.”

“Customer service is at the heart of everything we do and I think that’s why we’ve been so successful.”

Kate says hairdresser training is also very important.

“We have five apprentices doing training with us at the moment. We’ve almost developed our own in-salon training program, where we do on-trend training and get leading hair experts to come in and run sessions,” she says.

“We found a lot of hairdressers do their training in college, but then don’t do anything else. We want our team to be up with the current trends and always pushing themselves to the next level to offer our clients something new and different.”

If you’ve ever entered any business awards you’ll know how much of a lengthy process it is, often involving long written essays about your policies, procedures, marketing, finance, training and more.

Kate says even if you don’t win, entering awards is a chance to see where you can improve as a business.

“You really get to see your business as a whole,” she says.

“We’ve improved so much since we first started entering awards and a lot of it is actually on the back of doing those reports, because you can see what you need to be doing in the different areas to be considered for the award.”

“It’s a really good way to keep you motivate too and keep you moving forward with new ideas and initiatives.”

With so much success in such a short amount of time, where can Elysium Hair go from here?

“We’re not quite on the beach yet relaxing,” Kate laughs.

“I love thinking about the journey, how far we’ve come and all the people that have come on the journey with us. It’s a bit of a community here and that’s what I love about it, we’re not just this corporate business, we are like family in a way.”

“We are constantly coming up with new and exciting ideas, so you never know what the future will hold. It’ll be heads down, bums up for us.”
