In a shift away from the nude supermodels that usually dominate its pages, the 2016 Pirelli calendar is featuring some of the world’s most inspirational and accomplished women.
Shot by celebrated photographer Annie Leibovitz, the 43rd edition of the Pirelli calendar stars women known for their “outstanding professional, social, cultural, sporting and artistic accomplishment”, headlined by comedienne Amy Schumer, athlete Serena Williams and artist Yoko Ono.
Other famous faces gracing this year’s calendar include Chinese UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Yao Chen, Naked Heart Russia charity founder Natalia Vodianova, Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy, art collector and patroness Agnes Gund, writer Fran Lebowitz, philanthropist Mellody Hobson, film director Ava DuVernay, visual artist Shirin Neshat, singer Patti Smith, and influential blogger and publisher Tavi Gevinson.
Unlike typical Pirelli calendars, this year’s edition features no nude portraits (although Schumer and Williams do appear in their underwear) and no sexually provocative poses — Leibovitz says the photographs were conceived without the “male gaze” in mind.
As for why Schumer appears in her underwear, Leibovitz says it’s a joke — “it’s as if she didn’t get the memo saying that she could keep her clothes on”.
Schumer posted her portrait to Twitter with the caption: “Beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting, flawless, woman.”

Pirelli Tyres chief executive Marco Tronchetti Provera said the calendar marks a “very timely” departure from the company’s usual format.
“This represents what Pirelli thinks is beautiful,” he said.
