Iconic vintage clothing store Box Vintage in West End is on the market.

The business began back in 2004 and has steadily grown ever since, supplying Brisbane with a bountiful supply of high quality and fabulous vintage items including clothing, accessories and shoes.

We chatted to owner Nick Goding about his reasons for selling his successful store and what’s ahead for him now he’s stepping away from retail.

“With the success of my bars The End and Jungle, I’m moving more into the hospitality arena, expanding and beginning new projects. I’ve got some other things planned for 2015 but can’t say much just yet.”

Years ago, Box Vintage was the only place in town where you could get your hands on something quirky and unique, but even we didn’t realise how far back that was. “The first incarnation of the store began back in 2004 but even before that, we were selling vintage clothing at the markets. In our time, we’ve been open in two different locations, we’ve had stalls at Splendour in the Grass and Island Vibe Festival and sold vintage clothing at the Valley Markets way back in the day.

“When it opened, it was a slow growth for sure, as Australia was slow on the uptake for vintage fashion. But it started to boom around 2008 and 2009 and it has kept growing since then. We get all types there – from vintage die-hards who won’t wear anything else to people who just want a vintage tee to wear with their designer jeans. And that’s the best part — vintage is for everyone.”

Even though Nick is sad to leave Box Vintage behind, he’s also excited for what lies ahead.

“I’ve got so much on the go at the moment that it’s definitely the right time. I’m grateful to Box Vintage as it allowed me to fund my other projects and start other businesses. It also got me a profile and was iconic for what it is.

“I really want to sell it to someone who will take in on and make it successful for themselves. It has heaps of potential still and I’d love to sell it to someone who is passionate about it.”
