Last weeks Mercedes -Benz Fashion Week in Sydney was an insight into the scope of Australian fashion for the spring/summer season ahead.
Just as one summer season ends, 72 designer brands presented their spring/summer 2014/15 collections at Sydney’s Carriageworks to an estimated industry crowd of 27,000 over the course of five days.
Industry icon Carla Zampatti launched the week that saw a mixed bag of resort-ready looks, sharp tailored styles and highly embellished eveningwear. Early trends to emerge were a continuation of black and white looks that have dominated retail for the past two seasons. Black and white was a popular choice for Kim Ellery, whose Bondi Iceberg’s show featured dramatic tomboy-inspired looks in stark white, all black, and a combination print. Jessica Mouboy, Emma Lung and Gerard Butler were among the celebrities front row.
The Carla Zampatti, Dion Lee and Maticevski shows were also heavy on black and white, as was Brisbane’s Gail Sorronda, who added a Little Mermaid inspired collection to the monochromatic mix, complete with mermaid print and a Sebastian the crab tee.
Black and white stripes were a new take on the monochrome trend this year, with Dion Lee and Bec & Bridge leading the charge in striped relaxed suiting separates.
Colourful looks presented themselves both in vibrant saturated colour – rich reds at Ginger & Smart, cobalt blue at Dion Lee and Carla Zampatti – and more gelati-toned pastels at Michael Lo Sordo, Alice McCall, Bec & Bridge and Bianca Spender.
Lo Sordo’s soft trench coats were a hit in dusky pink, lemon yellow and cornflower blue.
It wasn’t all about subtlety, though. Highly embellished looks take the place of vibrant prints for spring/summer 2014 and Maticevski, Bianca Spender and Jayson Brunsdon showed some of the best.
In a new initiative for 2014, customers can buy selected new-season items well in advance of next summer from the MBFWA Boutique page. Labels including Michael Lo Sordo, Talulah, Bianca Spender, Phoenix Keating and Brisbane’s Gail Sorronda and Hayley Elsaesser have pieces available ahead of their summer collection drops later this year.
