Just over an hour’s drive north of Brisbane is the southernmost community on the Sunshine Coast – Caloundra.
Caloundra is a family friendly, stunning beach town that is fast becoming a popular holiday destination. It is easy to see why, when the region features hinterland mountains and multiple crisp blue and white beaches, along with plenty of attractions and activities for children of all ages.
Several beaches make up the coastline of Caloundra, each with their own special charm, offering endless opportunities for outside activities. Get in the water and try windsurfing, jetskiing, surfing, snorkelling or scuba diving or stay dry on the coastline making sandcastles, fishing or discovering Caloundra’s Coastal Path by foot or bicycle.
There are local markets every Sunday, rainbow lorikeet feedings daily at the Caloundra Golf Club and you can explore the town’s historical 1898 lighthouse.
If you’re interested in animals, watch the croc shows or enjoy the new Africa exhibit at Australia Zoo or visit UnderWater World where you can swim with a shark or kiss a seal.
If it’s adrenalin and excitement you’re after, AussieWorld is nearby with over 30 rides, a side show alley of games and the home of Ettamogah Pub (You won’t miss it, it has a chevy truck parked on top of the 18 metre tall building!). If your family is competitive, then why not race around the largest commercial go-kart track in Australia at the Big Kart Track.
Caloundra has a great range of accommodation choices including family friendly resorts, beach houses and cheaper hostels and holiday parks for those on a budget.
The winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful, Australian Tidy Towns Awards in 2012, this town is a beautiful and relaxing location to get away from city life.
