Brisbane is more beautiful than Kyoto, Rio De Janeiro, Seville, and even Sydney, according to popular travel guide company Rough Guides.
Rough Guides‘ poll, which was open to their 47,000 Facebook followers and almost 100,000 Twitter followers from around the world, rated Brisbane as the eighth most beautiful city in the world.
Sydney finished thirteenth. Just sayin’.
To be fair, even the Rough Guides website described Brisbane as a “surprising entry” in the list, but praised our city for “its winning combination of high-rise modern architecture, lush green spaces and the enormous Brisbane River that snakes its way through the centre before emptying itself into the azure Moreton Bay”.
The poll result is just the latest in a string of publicity windfalls for Brisbane, including a spot on the list of The Guardian‘s 2015 holiday hotspots, and being named Australia’s hippest city by Lonely Planet in 2014.
Brisbane’s high ranking has come under attack on Rough Guides‘ Facebook page, with one commenter describing our inclusion as “baffling”, and another asking “how on earth” we made the list.
Commenter Yvonne Bentley has gone into bat for us, however.
“Have you actually been to this city?” she wrote. “It depends on what you mean by beautiful; it can mean many things. Brisbane has it all, architecture old and new, it’s a clean city, friendly people and great weather. I have travelled the world and there are so many places that are filthy, rubbish everywhere, graffiti, homeless and beggars that are in your face, some just to scam you.
“For those of you who haven’t visited Brisbane lately, come and see for yourself.”
You tell ’em, Yvonne.
