Good news! Australia’s best beach is closer than you think…
As Aussies get ready to head to the beach to celebrate Australia Day, the online travel gurus at Wotif.com have revealed the top beach and coastal destinations that are set to draw the crowds this long weekend.
Product Director Donna Rodios said travellers typically made the most of the coast on Australia Day and Wotif.com accommodation bookings for the long weekend revealed Surfers Paradise holds the title for most popular Aussie beach destination.
“We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to a beach getaway, but it’s not hard to see why each year Surfers Paradise is a consistent favourite during the Australia Day weekend,” Ms Rodios said. “Surfers Paradise’s beach is located on the doorstep of the Gold Coast’s restaurant and bar hub and close to plenty of luxurious hotels.
“Noosa remains a popular favourite in second place, drawing people to its white beaches and relaxed atmosphere.
“Third to Noosa is Broadbeach, which may have been Surfers Paradise’s forgotten cousin in the past but we’re seeing it increase in popularity, moving up from fourth place last year.
“It’s a great beach location for families, with a lot of apartment style accommodation close to restaurants and it’s appealing to holidaymakers looking for a less-crowded beach to spread out their beach towels.
“Queensland prides itself on its stunning coastline so it’s not surprising that five of the most booked coastal destinations are in the ‘Sunshine State’, with Surfers Paradise, Noosa, Broadbeach, Cairns and Maroochydore all making the top ten.”
Ms Rodios said beaches in New South Wales also attract plenty of holidaymakers over the long weekend.
“Newcastle, Port Stephens, Port Macquarie and Wollongong all made the top ten and are becoming more popular,” she said. “It’s proving to be a very hot summer, so we expect plenty of holidaymakers will be packing their togs and BBQ tongs for the long weekend.
“For holidaymakers still looking to go away for the weekend to cool off in the pool or air conditioning, they should snap up a deal quickly as they won’t last long.”
