This baby penguin was given the name Bowie, after being born on the same day as singer David Bowie – making it an unexpected cute tribute to the late music icon.
Born last Friday morning (8 January) at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, the little penguin was christened Bowie after a vote.
The zoo took to Twitter for name suggestions, and it was a toss-up between Bowie and Elvis, with The King of Rock’n’Roll also sharing a the same birthday. But, as the zoo is already home to another penguin by the name of Elvis, Bowie won and a new star attraction was born.
As we now know, David Bowie sadly passed away on Monday — and this little guy sure does make an unexpected cute tribute to the singer.
Bowie will join 32 more “little penguins” at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. He is expected to grow to just 30 centimetres in height, which is the average for those of his species.
Although Bowie will live in this US zoo, little penguins exist naturally on the southern coast of Australia, so there’s a chance you could spot some of his cousins on your next holiday!
Those wanting to catch a glimpse of the zoo’s newest arrival will probably have to wait until it is Spring in the States, since he prefers the slightly warmer temperatures.
