Meet Julia. She loves chocolate milk, singing, and playing with her friends.

One in every 68 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, making it very prevalent and common. So, it was about time that there would be a character with autism appearing on a children’s show.

Sesame Street has taken aboard a little muppet called Julia through their initiative Sesame Street & Autism: See Amazing In All Children.

She joins the cast through the new online program that provides flashcards and activities for children to raise awareness of and teach them to empathise with those are on the autism spectrum.

One of the resources is a story book called “We’re Amazing, 1, 2, 3!” where Elmo teaches his friend Abby about Julia so that they understand how she responds differently to situations.

They all play together, learn more about each other, and share some chocolate milk!

We are thrilled that children with autism spectrum disorder will have representation on Sesame Street, and think it’s a step in the right direction! What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
