Have you ever wondered what would happen if the world actually ran out of money?
Author Murray Jones has written a children’s book all about it.
What if the World Runs Out of Money endeavours to entertain children, but also raise awareness about the important things in life besides money.
“The idea came to me about 18 months ago when I was watching news about countries going bankrupt,” Murray says. “My children looked very confused and one asked what would happen if the money all runs out.”
What if the World Runs Out of Money tells children that if it were to happen, things would be fine — everyone would give and share and help each other out.
“We live in a world where many people are obsessed with making money and accumulating stuff,” Murray says. “On the other side of the ledger are many very poor and often forgotten people.
“Love of money is the problem, not the money itself. In the book, I just wanted to remind people that the natural world would continue to work without money.”
The book, which is self-funded, will not be for sale. Instead, it will be available to individuals and organisations who make a public pledge to help someone out.
A pledge could be something as simple as “a child pledging to help a neighbour or a large corporate pledging to donate some goods or services”.
At this stage, pledging is purely based on trust — once you pledge, it will be up to you to keep your word.
Mr Jones hopes that the book will ultimately get people to stop and think about the role money plays in their lives.
