Miranda Kerr’s mother, Therese Kerr, wants to see a chemical-free beauty industry.
With a move just south of the border near Murwillumbah, she’s now practically a local. Therese Kerr is not only the woman who produced one of the world’s finest super models, Miranda Kerr; she’s also an astute business woman who wants to revolutionise the beauty industry to be chemical-free. I caught up with her to find out why, and to organise an arranged marriage…
I’ve never spoken to a supermodel’s Mum before!
Ha! Well, I’m just a normal person just like we all are. Even Miranda, believe it or not. She’s just a normal little girl.
Miranda has Kora Organics, but you’ve gone out on your own and you’ve launched Divine by Therese Kerr. Why?
As a family we are committed to providing certified organic goodness in every aspect. Miranda already has premium skin care, but because of Miranda’s contract she couldn’t do personal care like deodorant, shampoos, conditioners and toothpaste, because she has her own contractual agreements. So what we’ve done as a family is combined but I have it under my name, all the personal care stuff.
Why do you believe so much in a chemical free world? Does this come from being a country girl and wanting to live clean?
I actually had tumors in my spleen in 2001 and had my spleen removed. I also had endometriosis in 1995 and I actually started to look, once I had tumors in my spleen, as to what could have possibly impacted my body for it to do that.
What do you think it was?
Well, honestly, after the research that I’ve done and working with the professionals and the professors that I work with on a day to day basis, I know that the impact of the chemicals and all of the synthetic hormones impacted my body in a negative way, especially with the endometriosis.
What does the spleen do?
It’s a blood-filtering organ. So when you don’t have a spleen, your lymph system takes over and you are supposedly amino-compromised. But I don’t buy into that at all. I’ve never been healthier in my life, but that’s because I chose health. I believe in this day and age, with the untested chemicals we are surrounding ourselves in and consuming by way of pesticides and herbicides on our produce, as well as the chemicals that are in everyday products that we put on our skin, we have to really choose health to make sure that we maintain our health and stay healthy.
How do you choose health? People say it’s expensive. Is it expensive?
The thing is that there is a feeling regarding that. But there are over 10,500 chemicals alone used in skincare and beauty care products that have never been tested to see if they are detrimental or not. The ones that have been tested have been tested in isolation, so it’s very concerning that we are putting these products on our bodies and using oral care products which have never been tested to see if they are actually safe.
The research is coming out. Even a World Health Organization report in 2012 stated that endocrine disorders are at an all-time high and they think we are at the tip of the iceberg in regards to that. Male semen quality has dropped 40 per cent, so it’s not just impacting women, it’s impacting men. It’s really sad and most people don’t usually talk about it.
So you and Miranda are on a mission to change our thinking, and with her profile, it’s working. She is everywhere, you must be proud.
You know, it’s crazy sometimes; we have to just pinch ourselves. My husband and I were in LA and there were these massive floor-to-ceiling pictures of Miranda in shopping centers everywhere and we were so proud. She is gorgeous, she’s as gorgeous on the inside as she is on the outside, she’s just a beautiful light to this world. But I know I’m her mum and I’m very biased…[and] little Flynn is just gorgeous.
Flynn is just so genetically blessed. He’s around the same age as my Millie, and if Prince George turns her down, Flynn is second in line.
Ha! Well, he’s so smart as well. He’s a very clever little boy.
