Learn to sail this summer in Moreton Bay, Brisbane’s paradise for boaties.

Looking for a new family adventure for the holidays? Always wanted to try your hand at sailing or even dreamed of one day owning a yacht of your own? Moreton Bay is the ideal location to dip your toe in the water.

Internationally recognised as a boater’s paradise, Moreton bay is directly offshore from Brisbane with both tropical and temperate waters. Southern Cross Yachting, located at East Coast Marina in the Brisbane seaside village suburb of Manly on the Harbour, offers ‘Learn to Sail’ experiences for children, families and would-be sailors of all ages.

With no minimum age restrictions and great weather all year round, the summer holidays are the perfect time to take to the water. Southern Cross Yachting is the largest Royal Yachting Association (RYA) accredited sailing school in Australia, and offers a range of packages to suit all levels and time-frames from one day learn-to-sail sessions to five day adventures living on board.  RYA is the world’s largest maritime training operation.

Your adventure starts from the minute you step aboard Southern Cross Yachting’s 40 foot luxury yachts where you’ll meet your sailing instructor. Then it’s all hands on deck as you take to the tidal waterways of Moreton Bay. With its hundreds of islands, a river and port, it offers diverse sailing challenges, making it the ideal place to learn.

A bay of stunning beauty and diverse marine life, children over 12 are more likely to participate in the hands-on sailing; however kids of all ages can enjoy the experience as they watch for dolphins, humpback whales in the season or the elusive dugong.

As Southern Cross Yachting training courses are RYA accredited each day of sailing practice with your instructor builds towards a certification. Levels vary, starting with the ‘Introduction to Yachting’ certificate awarded to participants after just one day, through to professionally recognised qualifications including ‘Yacht Master Offshore’.

All training yachts can accommodate up to 10 people on a single day trip or up to six people overnight, and the family charters make sure there are extra stops for plenty of swimming time for the kids. Michael Job, Principal of Southern Cross Yachting, has been sailing the world’s oceans for more than 40 years.

Now a ‘Yacht Master Offshore Instructor Examiner,’ he has taught a wide range of students to sail from his school at East Coast Marina for over 17 years. Before finding his way to our shores, he lived in South Hampton, as an instructor at the Hamble School of Yachting, one of the world’s largest sailing schools.

East Coast Marina is the perfect location for Southern Cross Yachting and its students. It not only provides the fastest and most convenient access to beautiful Moreton Bay, it’s just minutes from the Brisbane CBD, making a ‘Learn- to-Sail’ experience easier than ever.

It’s also the ideal launching place for anyone wanting more time on the water and considering a boat of their own, with extensive dry rack and wet berth storage facilities, a restaurant, customer amenities and 24 hour security.
