A Brisbane gelateria has whipped the field to scoop the title of Australia’s best ice cream for the second year in a row.

Hamilton’s Milani House of Gelato beat 164 ice cream, gelato and sorbet entries to win the Grand Champion title at the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show’s (RQFWS) Ice Cream, Gelato and Sorbet Competition, presented at the Brisbane Showgrounds today.

For the second year in a row, it was Milani House of Gelato’s dark chocolate sorbet that wowed the judges.

“Their dark chocolate sorbet has a smooth creamy texture and is close to being perfect,” ice cream expert and RQFWS judge Garry Baker says.

“Queensland has the best sorbets by far and the RQFWS is the premium competition for sorbets in Australia.”

Milani House of Gelato’s wins are the only times that a sorbet has taken out the Grand Champion title.

“For a sorbet to win overall is a great achievement because they don’t have the advantage of all the dairy milk solids that ice cream and gelato have to make them nice and creamy.”

Milani House of Gelato won six prizes at this year’s event, after winning five last year.

Aside from the Australian Grand Champion gong for their dark chocolate sorbet, the gelateria won the Champion Vanilla or Chocolate Ice Cream or Gelato award for their milk chocolate gelato; the Flavoured Ice Cream or Gelato award and the Champion Ice Cream or Gelato award for their coffee gourmet gelato; and the Champion Sorbet and Queensland Ice Cream, Gelato or Sorbet awards for their dark chocolate sorbet.

Earlier this year, Milani House of Gelato won the Grand Champion Dairy Product and Australia’s Best Gelato awards at the Australian Grand Dairy Awards.

Owner Yue Lin has been in the hospitality industry for two decades, but it was a trip to Italy in 2004 that set him on the path to gelato greatness.

He fell in love with gelato overseas, and undertook a gelato training course in Sydney when he got back to Australia. He then learned how to make gelato directly from the masters of the craft at the University of Bologna, and eventually bought the Hamilton gelateria in 2014.

Mr Lin hand-makes his gelato every morning, and says it stands out from the pack because of its freshness and natural ingredients.

“All natural ingredients, nothing artificial, fresh milk, fresh fruit and made fresh daily,” he says.

Milani House of Gelato is located at 53 Racecourse Road, Hamilton. It’s open from 3pm to 10pm Tuesday to Friday, midday to 10pm Saturday to Sunday, and closed on Mondays.
