For the first time in three years, the Eat Street Markets have temporarily closed their doors — but they’ll be back in a big way later this month.

Eat Street will be shut for the next three weekends, as it relocates 800 metres down Macarthur Avenue (in the direction of the Northshore CityCat terminal).

The new location will boast 1,000 more seats, and tables with extra seating capacity, meaning that the days of awkwardly wandering around the market with your lángos, desperately trying to find somewhere to sit, should be a thing of the past.

It’ll also be easier to get to, with a CityCat terminal 300 metres from the front door, 1,350 free car parks, and a direct access road from Kingsford Smith Drive to the car parks. There’s also a new City Council bus route slated to service the area.

A new moonlight cinema, dubbed OpenSky Theatre, will show free movies and entertainment on a big outdoor screen, and there’ll be three stages for live bands and performers.

Even finding your meal will get easier, as the markets will now employ new technology to help diners find their fave vendors using the Google Maps app on your phone.

For those looking to host a private party, there’ll be seven themed areas available for private and corporate functions, seven days a week.

Oh, and if you’re worried those trademark fairy lights that find their way into every photo taken at Eat Street won’t be following the markets down the road, rest easy — in fact, event organisers promise that there will be “thousands and thousands more fairy lights” at the new location.

The new-look Eat Street Markets (221D Macarthur Avenue, Northshore, Hamilton) will open on Friday 31 March. The markets will be open from 4pm to 10pm every Friday and Saturday, and 11am to 7pm every Sunday.
