Brisbane’s newest Turkish restaurant, Downtown Istanbul, has opened in the new precinct opposite the Hawthorne Cinema Complex.

Opening quietly last weekend, the venue offers traditional Turkish flavours with a contemporary twist.

Operated by the former owners of Ahmets Bulimba, guests can expect the same Turkish pizzas, pides and grilled meats that made them famous, along with some unique new menu additions.

Head chef Buphen Gurung is warming and delighting palates with Turkish Gozleme, a traditional Turkish flatbread from hand-made dough, filled with various toppings, including sweet potato, spinach and feta, before being grilled.

Other highlights of the menu include the Pilic Sehrazat, charcoal grilled chicken breast, beetroot and creamy mushroom sauce, and the Ali Nazik, roasted eggplant, capsicum, onion and garlic with yoghurt and your choice of meat. The menu can also cater to vegetarian tastes.

Cocktails on offer include the Downtown Sangria, a version of the traditional Sangria of Spain which includes red wine, orange liquer, fresh juices, blueberries and a dash of pomegranate, topped with lemonade or soda; and the Middle Eastern Margarita — Pampero Anejo Tequila shaken with Cointreau, fresh lemon juice and a dash of pomegranate molasses, salt and sumac rim.

Downtown Istanbul (4/274 Hawthorne Road, Hawthorne) will be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, with live music on Sunday afternoons. The menu is also available for takeaway, and a breakfast menu will become available later this month.
