Pop-up picnic Le Dîner en Blanc will take over one of Brisbane’s public spaces on Saturday 22 October.

The ‘secret’ event reveals its location at the last possible moment, with guests meeting at assigned departure locations to be escorted to the event’s actual location by a Dîner en Blanc volunteer.

Last year’s event ended up attracting 2,000 guests to Queens Park; this year’s event is expected to attract more than 3,000 revellers to its secret location.

Launched nearly 30 years ago in Paris, Le Dîner en Blanc has become a global epicurean phenomenon, and is now held in over 70 cities in more than 25 countries around the world.

To maintain the uniqueness of the event, guests are required to follow a fairly strict and demanding set of rules.

They must dress all in white (the official dress code is ‘elegant’; originality is encouraged, but only if it’s stylish and tasteful).

They must bring their own table, two white chairs, and a white tablecloth.

They must either pack their own picnic basket, comprising of fine food and proper stemware and white dinnerware, or purchase one of the pre-made hampers packed by Cuisine on Cue.

They can purchase wine and champagne in advance from Sirromet Wines, but beer and hard liquor are strictly prohibited.

They have to leave the location with all of their belongings, leftovers and litter (but honestly, you should be doing that anyway).

If you’re still keen, you can register for the event now — but of course, that’s a bit of a process, too.

Registration happens in three phases. Phase 1 is for members who attended the previous year; Phase 2 is for new members referred by Phase 1 attendees; and Phase 3 is for people have signed up to the waiting list at brisbane.dinerenblanc.info/register.

Once you’re registered for the Saturday 22 October event, attendance is mandatory, regardless of weather conditions — Le Dîner en Blanc goes ahead no matter what, come rain, hail or shine.
