Celebrity chef Neil Perry is bringing his acclaimed Burger Project concept to South Bank.
Burger Project, which is dedicated entirely to gourmet burgers, first launched in Sydney in 2014 after Perry — one of Australia’s most renowned chefs and restaurateurs — felt the need to take his famed Rockpool Bar & Grill gourmet burger to a wider audience.
In their quest to make “the people’s burger”, Perry’s team take whole 36-month Cape Grim grass-fed chuck and brisket steak and grind it in-house to make the patties. They also make their own secret sauce and churn their own ice-cream, and diners can see all this activity taking place in the open kitchen when they place their order.
Using all natural ingredients, Burger Project puts a particular emphasis on provenance, sustainability and community engagement.
It’s certainly paid off — there are already two Burger Project venues in Sydney, and just last month, Melbourne welcomed its first Burger Project in the fashionable new St Collins Lane development, boasting a menu full of classic burgers like the American Cheese and the Cheese and Bacon, and other not-so-traditional burgers like The Bacon Project, Fried Chicken Katsu and Magic Mushroom, as well as fries and homemade ice-creams.
There are plans to open three more Sydney venues and one more Melbourne venue later this year, and that’s just the beginning of the ambitious expansion plans.
Now here’s the good news — Neil Perry has told Bmag that Brisbane’s first Burger Project will open up early next year.
“We’re looking at opening our first Burger Project at South Bank in February 2017, as well as other locations later in the year, but these are still to be determined and confirmed,” he says.
“By the end of 2017, we will have at least 20 Burger Projects operating throughout Australia.”
