A night out with friends doesn’t have to mean an exorbitant cab ride home. We uncover Brisbane’s best suburban bars to keep you social while keeping it local.

The Hyde Out

A great place to hide out in the western suburbs is Yeronga bar and eatery, The Hyde Out. Serving breakfast and lunch throughout the day, there is also a full dinner menu at night while you sip on a beverage of choice. We like the braised lamb shank in a green pea sauce, mashed potato, garlic confit and roasted carrots. A range of craft beers and wines are available here, and the cocktails are some of the most reasonably priced that we’ve seen in a while. The passionfruit caprioska is perfect for the warmer months.

92 Hyde Rd, Yeronga. Tel: 3217 1754.

Canvas Club

The retro fit-out of Canvas Club perfectly blends in with the eclectic wonders of the surrounding Woolloongabba antique shops. Vintage furnishings create a cozy interior, while the outside courtyard is dotted with hanging plants that invite you to sit back and have a drink in the sun. Canvas specialises in cocktails, including Peter Pipers Pickled Pear with bourbon, rocket, slow cooked peach and pear infused syrup with a hint of Italian menthol. There is also the blank canvas option, where the bar tender will create a drink especially for you based on your unique tastes.

16B Logan Rd, Woolloongabba. Tel: 3891 2111.

Junk Bar

If quirky is your style, look no further than Brisbane’s inner-north to the Junk Bar. Through the heavy curtains lies another low-lit world filled with vintage furnishings and funky trinkets. Cocktails are a Junk specialty, including a new spider-based drink mixing chinotto, chocolate liqueur and vodka topped with coconut cream. Food on offer includes antipasto options and a range of sweet or savoury bagels. Due to popular demand, Junk Bar has recently expanded with a new Skukum Lounge which can accommodate for group bookings of up to 50 people.

215 Waterworks Rd, Ashgrove. Tel: 3168 2993.

The Crafty Bull

Sunday afternoons are well-spent on the balcony of Crafty Bull in Bulimba. Here, east-siders can choose from 20 craft beers on tap, in an impressive line-up at the bar. Cider and ginger beer can also be poured as well. Beer options include brews from Stone & Wood and Holgate, as well as Crafty Bull’s very own Bull Steam Larger. There is also a range of boutique wines available. The food menu comprises an array of share options including duck sausage rolls, fresh prawns, and a mushroom and coconut pate.

210 Oxford St, Bulimba. Tel: 33957986.

Too Zero Bar and Inn of Indulgence

There’s a new kid in town over at Stafford Heights, bringing good food and drinks to one of the more suburban parts of suburban Brisbane. The Too Zero Bar and Inn of Indulgence mixes modern chic and rustic furnishings to create an elegant yet quirky atmosphere. The food at this establishment is excellent, including a very moreish cornbeef hash, with potato puree, bacon, relish and fennel salad. The bar serves up a good list of local craft beers, boutique wine and seasonal cocktails.

20 Farrant St, Stafford Heights. Tel: 3350 4915.
