There’s something fishy going on over at the old Clayfield Aquarium, which has undergone a sea change into a bright and funky café.

Let Minnow Café references a small fish in its name in tribute to the building’s origins, but the new café’s vibrant, modern interior and comprehensive breakfast and lunch menus are a far cry from the fish tanks of yore.

We stopped in for breakfast and couldn’t go past the healthy open omelette, served with mushroom, tomato, zucchini, onion, capsicum, shallots and a house relish. A light rye and bacon were optional extras with this dish. This meal was a great start to the day, with a generous amount of veggies packed into the fresh omelette. The relish was a touch too much on the sweet side for me, but still worked to lift the omelette when used in small doses.

Other breakfast options here have a similar touch of healthy eating to them, including the tinned minnows, which are sardines with a soft boiled egg, tomato, salsa verde and sourdough.

Even something not traditionally healthy has been crafted in a more wholesome way at this cafe with wholemeal waffles on the menu, served with cinnamon ice-cream, seasonal fruit and maple syrup.

For drinks, we loved the Chamellia 9 Spice fresh chai latte, which was lovely and aromatic, and worked so well on soy milk. A dusting of crunchy sweet cinnamon on top was a really nice touch.

While the lunch menu at Let Minnow isn’t massively extensive in the number of dishes available, what is on offer takes inspiration from a wide range of global cuisines.

There is a Vietnamese bahn mi roll or bowl available, with pork shoulder, house pate, pickled vegetables, cucumber, mayonnaise, coriander, mint and hot sauce. This delicious mélange is either served on a fresh baguette or in a bowl with greens.

Another bread or bowl option comes in the form of a Mediterranean Roast Vegetable Burger, with hummus, haloumi, zucchini, caramelised onion and roast capsicum on either a burger bun or served in a bowl.

The minnow tacos offer a taste of Central America, with pan-fried local seasonal fish, avocado salsa, red cabbage and chipotle mayonnaise.

The flexibility of this well-crafted menu caters to all types of dietary requirements, including vegan, dairy free and gluten free.

Let Minnow Café can be found at 57 Park Avenue in Clayfield and is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week.
