Long summer days are made for sipping on an ice cold drink by a beach. If the beach is also by the river, that’s an added bonus.

Boasting Brisbane’s only beachside beer garden, the brand new Southbank Beer Garden has just opened in the heart of the Southbank Parklands. It offers a seaside haven in the middle of the city where you can sit back, relax and soak up Brisbane’s balmy days.

The beer garden area itself has a modern rustic feel, with wooden benchtops and barstools scattered around a wide open plan area.

There is a contemporary restaurant section as well, with stringed lights and plants turning the area into a garden wonderland. Meals are served all day long, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The restaurant uses an open fire char-grill to serve up some cracking barbecue options. Start the day with a serve of house hickory smoked brisket, served with baked white beans and spinach. For anyone with a sweet-tooth there is a flap jack banana stack with foster sauce and vanilla bean or smoked maple bacon ice cream.

For lunch and dinner there are burgers and steak sandwiches available, including a vegetarian chickpea burger with salad, roast peppers, tomato and sumac yoghurt.

Other substantial eats includes the spiced sovereign lamb backstrap with cous cous and parsley salad, as well as a half chipotle chicken with chimichurri sauce and baby potatoes.

Healthy options include a smoked vegetable salad with marinated feta, or a spring pea salad with bacon lardons, a poached egg and shaved parmesan.

With Christmas parties on the horizon, the Southbank Beer Garden has a ready list of function packages, for both stand-up cocktail events and seated dining affairs.

We tried the warm stone baked sourdough bread, served with eggplant dip and pesto. The bread was generously slathered in a herb butter making it very moreish and a perfect vehicle for the fresh dips.

We also loved the meaty pork riblettes, served with a apple and bourbon barbecue sauce. While ribs are notoriously messy, these were worth getting your hands sticky for. They were packed full of meat and the sauce was nice and tasty.

Southbank Beer Garden is located at 30ba Stanley Plaza at South Bank and is open seven days a week.
