You’ve probably seen their funky VW kombi van around town, but now popular food truck Pizzantica is set to open up a Pizzeria in Hawthorne.

Offering an array of authentic Italian Napoli-style pizzas, the Kombi van — which has a Ferrari-red pizza oven on the back — has become a familiar sight at food truck events around Brisbane.

Owner Luca Ferone started the business over a year ago in the hope of bringing Italian culture and traditional foods to Brisbane.

“We started (the business) because we wanted to bring the Italian culture to people’s backyards and to people’s events,” he says.

Luca never thought the van would become as popular as it has. Now, he says, “there is high demand for a store, and a lot of people want to try our food, which is great”.

Luca says the new pizzeria will reflect the food truck in look, feel and taste.

“Everything we do is authentic, traditional, fresh and simple,” he says.

“We want the store to be very comfortable, with good quality food, good service and very rustic.”

Luca’s business mentor Mike Renda says he and Luca wanted to give the roving food van a permanent home so people could visit whenever they want to.

“We are really confident it will be popular, because of our great rapport with the van,” he says.

“We just wanted to create a place where you can get real value for money, feel comfortable, enjoy being there and it’s not busting the bank.

“We hope the local community will embrace it.”

Opening a restaurant is a huge step up from a food truck, so we have to wonder — will the boys be able to cope?

Luca’s not worried at all. He actually expects things to run a lot smoother, especially in the kitchen.

“It will be easier than the truck, because in the truck you don’t have all the stuff in the kitchen like the fridges and the ovens,” he says.

“There will be a lot more space, too. And we are used to getting things out pretty quickly with the large crowds at events.”

Pizzantica Pizzeria will be located on Riding Road in Hawthorne, but there is no opening date as of yet.

If you in need of a Pizzantica fix before then, the food truck regularly stops over at Green Beacon Brewing in Teneriffe, the Milton Mini Markets, Hawthorne’s Love Your Local Markets and Jan Power’s Powerhouse Market.
