If the standard bowl of cereal isn’t doing it for you in the mornings, a recently updated breakfast menu at Alcove Café and Deli may be just what you need to get out of bed bright and early.

Located at Wilston Village, this homely café has added a range of internationally-inspired dishes using local produce to its morning menu.

New dishes start with the huevos rancheros, which is a slow cooked Mexican bean salsa with poached eggs on the side, topped with flat bread, avocado and sour cream. A great vegetarian choice for the morning after the night before.

A similar menu addition is the chorizo ragu, which is also served up with beans and poached eggs but adds in some slow cooked chorizo and a slice of fresh sourdough.

The very tasty lamb koftas, make up another new dish. These are served up with herbed yoghurt, rosemary tomatoes and cumin poached eggs. The koftas use top quality meat, and are lifted nicely by the fresh herbs and spices peppered throughout this dish.

Despite these tasty menu additions, we still like some breakfast staples at Alcove, which stand the test of time on the menu for a reason.

We like a bit of Pa’s Pie, which is a generous serve of slow cooked savoury mince topped with creamy mashed potato, poached eggs and soft pita bread. A mix of herbs in the savoury mince ensures that this hearty dish is nice and tasty as well as being filling. Adding a bit of tobasco sauce really hits the spot with this dish too.

Lastly, it’s always hard to go past the good old Alcove breakfast, serving up bacon, haloumi, poached eggs and a potato apple rosti. The mix of potato and apple in the rosti adds a great seasonal freshness to what would otherwise be a standard hash brown.

Alcove itself offers a rustic, cosy feel with plenty of outdoor seating, and dog water bowls are also available if you don’t want to leave the pooch at home.

Local jams and relishes are also available for sale here for anyone wanting to bring the gourmet experience home with them.

Open from 6am to 2pm seven days a week, Alcove can be found on Kedron Brook Rd at Wilston.
