With its quirky furnishings and a menu that uses freshly foraged ingredients, Deer Duck Bistro has become an iconic restaurant in Auchenflower over the last four years, and has just released a brand new menu.
Antiquarians and gourmands alike will delight in the combination of old world art and knick-knacks peppered around the restaurant, which include wingback chairs, giant candlesticks and unique antique china plates. The low lighting works to create an intimate but fun atmosphere amongst the funky decor.
There are four separate labyrinthine areas within Deer Duck Bistro, starting with a bar area which winds its way down to a parlour lounge filled with chesterfield sofas and other nineteenth-century-style furnishings. Up some low steps is a large dining area, with a small separate private dining area tucked away to one side.
The menu at Deer Duck Bistro changes with the seasons, with a new seven course degustation menu now on offer.
One of the best dishes on this menu is the three-day cooked blade beef, pumpkin puree, onion rings, mustard cress topped with leek dust. The beef in this dish is more tender than an Elvis song, and is offset nicely with the crispy onion rings and sweet pureed pumpkin.
Other new menu items include a crispy, de-boned chicken wing served with charred corn, tarragon and clear mung bean tofu. There is also a dish of barramundi served with shitake mushrooms and black rice with a ginger chilli caramelised shaosing jus. Both of these are again cooked to perfection, and served with some very tasty sauces.
Desserts include a very refreshing rockmelon sorbet on a bed of pistachio and vanilla salt, as well as a decadent hazelnut mousse served with wafer-thin chocolate shards and pear gel.
A vegetarian degustation menu is also available, blending together ingredients such as tofu, corn and chanterelle mushrooms; or pumpkin, leek and mustard.
Given Deer Duck Bistro’s preference for foraging for fresh ingredients, there may be small menu variations. The restaurant therefore only lists key ingredients on the menu while full explanations are provided on the night.
Matching wines are also available with both degustation options, which include an interesting mix of local boutique whites and reds, as well as French sparkling.
While Deer Duck Bistro is known for its degustation meals, you can also order a two-course or three-course a la carte meal from Tuesday to Friday. This option features the same items from the degustation menu plus some extras. The kitchen will also happily tailor these dishes for vegetarians and vegans.
Deer Duck Bistro is located at 396 Milton Rd, Auchenflower, and is open for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday from 5:30pm to late.
