Not everyone is a fan of salty pretzels and sausages, so The Bavarian Bier Cafe have concocted a fresh yet flavoursome sister menu to accompany their more traditional offerings.
Focusing on lighter flavours, and plates that zing on your palate, the new modern menu offers share plates, entrees, mains, lunch options and daily specials.
Using local and high-quality produce and ingredients, each dish is beautifully balanced and moreish. The difficulty lies in trying to narrow down your choices to a reasonable number.
The new menu is called ‘New Modern Favourites’ and is an intoxicating mix of textures, colours and tastes. Starter standouts include the popcorn shrimp “dampfnudel” buns with spicy dressing and slaw, grandma’s famous meatballs and the steamed prawn dumplings.
Then there are soups, salads and sides that all sound delicious, but it’s the mains where all the excitement lies.
The BBQ Smokehouse & Grill section is full of sumptous meats including spare pork ribs with a sweet and spicy house glaze, the spice-rubbed wagyu beef tri-tip steak with smoky onion rub and the combination platter for two.
The other mains are just are appealing, with choices ranging from pan-roasted salmon with lentils and bett-pickled red onions, crisp-roasted barramundi with sweet and sour capsicums or the wild boar pappardelle.
The combination of the traditional and modern menus allows the Bavarian Bier Cafe to pay homage to the authentic cuisine it has become known for but also allows the introduction of lighter flavours. Of course, don’t fret — you can still come in and enjoy the German sausage, Bavarian Tasting and Munich Brewers platters or crackling pork belly. Many people are also partial to the selection of schnitzels and the famous crispy pork knuckle.
If you can squeeze it in, make sure you sample the warm doughnuts or the soft-baked bitter chocolate fondant.
The Bavarian Bier Cafe is located on Level 1, Eagle Street Pier, Brisbane City.
