If you’re looking for a cafe where the baristas remember your name and your coffee order and you want to feel part of a community, then Badminton Brew is for you.
At only 24, owner and barista Rachael Hinton-Smith is fresh-faced, full of fun and not at all daunted by the prospect of running a busy cafe.
Badminton Brew opened their doors on the first day of December last year and the business has been steadily growing ever since. Serving delicious Elixir coffee (the Espresso Blend) and with a small but delectable selection of sweet and savoury treats on offer, BB is a great spot to sit, sip and savour the slower pace of the outer suburbs.
Rachael has been in the hospitality industry for years — most of her life, in fact, with her father Michael Smith owning and operating various establishments in Brisbane over the years. So rather than having to learn everything the hard way, Rachael has taken her vast amount of experience gleaned from years of working in the family businesses and applied it directly into her first foray into business ownership.
Her dad has definitely shared all his knowledge and contacts, with Badminton Brew sharing many of the same sources for supplies. Her dad is even the man behind the infamous mini brownies that are served complimentary with each coffee.
Badminton Brew came about because Rachael was on the hunt for a new challenge and wanted to do something different. She knew coffee and had a good grasp of management, so opening her own cafe seemed like a logical next step.
Sticking to a strict business model, Rachael was selective as she was searching for her new venue with some of her non-negotiables including lots of easy parking, close to main roads and affordable rent. This meant she could offer a quality product at an affordable price.
Open every day, weekdays and Saturday from 5.30am, Sunday from 7am, the friendly staff at Badminton Brew will make you feel instantly welcome. There is an old-school community approach at BB, and if you’re a regular, you’ll be greeted by name when you arrive. Rachael knows a huge amount about most of her customers lives as they share their daily updates with her. She is all about building genuine friendships and feels fulfilled by the connection she has with her customers.
Badminton Brew is mainly focuses on a takeaway trade in the early morning and as the pace slows, locals and young mums often pop in for a coffee and snack. All food is made onsite or at Backstreet Cafe.
Keep your eyes out for the BB Travelling Cup as well. The tradition started way back in the day at her father’s cafe and involved regular customers taking a takeaway coffee cup from the cafe on the road with them as they travelled and sending photos back.
Now there is almost an entire wall of travel snaps of the red Elixir cups held high — you can go on a world tour and not even leave the cafe!
Badminton Brew may be a little further out of town but if you’re a lover of fine brownies, friendly service and a community feel, make sure you stop by sometime.
