Tucked down Elizabeth Street Arcade in the CBD, My Little Health is a teeny tiny hub of healthy and happiness-inducing products.
Owner Elissa Phadungkiat opened the mini wholefoods supermarket about four months ago and already there is a steady stream of local customers and daily visitors who stop by for their organic sweet fix, nutritious protein bars or selection of kombucha.
The walls are lined with wooden shelving that is laden from floor to ceiling with all manner of products from the typical suspects you would find in your usual health food store to some that almost defy description and just scream out to be sampled ASAP.
As manager Izzy Fadzil says, “We like to stock products that make healthy eating easier and tastier. You don’t just have to eat spinach to be healthy.”
For your everyday cooking needs, there’s an extensive range of organic bulk foods including pasta, flours, grains, cereals, sauces, seasonings and condiments. On the wall opposite is a fridge and freezer filled with goodies. The fridge is stocked with flavoured coconut water, a variety of kombucha, chia squeeze sachets and Pana Chocolates (raw chocolate handmade in Melbourne). The freezer that sits adjacent is filled with frozen ready-to-go meals for a fast (but healthy) lunch or dinner. Perfect to grab on your way home.
The rear wall is covered in a huge chalkboard, decorated with the store’s name, flowers and words describing the store. But this almost goes unnoticed as all focus is on the brightly-lit cabinet that is chock full of sweet treats. Most of the items are sourced from Naked Treaties in Byron Bay, but there are also cupcakes from Cloverly Cupcakes and the flavours sound mouth-wateringly good — choose from mocha coconut, peanut butter and passionfruit vanilla. They are egg and dairy-free so suitable for vegans.
Most products in the store are gluten-free and vegan-friendly, and there are myriad options which contain no additives or preservatives to ensure you’re eating as ‘clean’ as possible.
There are definitely some more unusual offerings like black rice, kelp noodles, bean pasta, Coco-roons and powdered peanut butter. Keep an eye out for the Flavor God range, if only for the name, but the seasonings sound appealing in their own right too.
There is also a huge range of teas, coffees and cocoa/cacao-based mixes for your drinking pleasure, so the only advice we have is to make sure you allow yourself some time to peruse the choices and pick wisely (you can’t take the entire store home with you).
Open six days a week Mon-Thurs 9am-6pm, Fri 9am-7pm and Sat 11am-4.30pm, My Little Health is located at Shop 6, Elizabeth Arcade, 99 Elizabeth St, CBD.
