Looking for somewhere that offers authentic Mexican food with the biggest selection of boutique tequila in Brisbane? Then you need to head to Los Villanos Mexican Kitchen at The Barracks.

Owner Jamie Webb is a softly-spoken, laid-back dude who also happens to be a restaurant mogul. Like a stealthy ninja, Webb is slowly taking over the Brisbane food scene and dominating it with a slew of quality establishments.

Aside from Los Villanos, he owns Gordita, Lefty’s Old Time Music Hall, Sonny’s House of Blues and Peasant and has previously operated restaurants in New York and Sydney. You can expect great things from anything he puts his hands on, and Los Villanos is no exception.

The idea to open a Mexican restaurant came to him after travelling to LA and eating Mexican for days and days on end. Coming home, he struggled to find good quality, authentic Mexican food similar to what he had been eating overseas. So after much research, he did what any self-respecting entrepreneur would do — he opened his own venue specialising in delicious food and offering a huge choice of boutique tequilas to wash it all down.

Los Villanos means ‘the villains’ and Webb has named the venue after the famous Mexican wrestling team and the decor reflects this with paraphernalia including posters and masks dotted about.

Open for less than two months, the place has been going gangbusters and the most popular choices on the menu are the tacos and the beef cheeks. The food is simple but packed full of flavour and fresh ingredients and the punters are voting with their feet. The venue has been flat out since they opened their doors in late 2014 and the consensus has been very good. The staff are friendly, funny and eager to help and being able to see into the open kitchen adds to the atmosphere.

Los Villanos is open seven days a week from midday until 11pm (but stays open a little later on Friday and Saturday nights). For more information, check out our dining guide.
