Urbanspoon, the popular restaurant recommendation service, is about to be taken off the menu.
Urbanspoon has been sold to Zomato, an online restaurant discovery service based in India.
This is good news for Zomato, but not good news for Urbanspoon fans — Deepinder Goyal, the founder and CEO of Zomato, recently told Mashable that his company doesn’t plan to maintain the Urbanspoon brand.
“We will convert everything to Zomato,” Goyal said. “The brand is important for us. A lot of people respect it for what they’ve done. But we have to make a long-term versus short-term decision. In the longer term it should all be one brand.”
Urbanspoon last changed hands when it was acquired by IAC in 2009. This time around, the acquisition price has been reported to be more than $50 million.
“Zomato’s significant investments in people and technology will bring Urbanspoon customers, restaurant owners, and food bloggers a number of new capabilities and features,” Keela Robison, Urbanspoon’s CEO, said in a statement.
Urbanspoon is one of half a dozen companies acquired by Zomato to expand its presence in new and existing markets.
