The countdown is on to the best day of the year – and by best, we mean the day where everyone eats until they explode! Here are some popular and off-the-grid places to buy the best ingredients for your Christmas lunch or dinner.
In Brisbane, we are spoilt for choice with so many markets, retailers, cafes and restaurants offering Christmas treats. We’ve compiled a list of that covers everything from seafood to savoury snacks, meats and plum puddings.
A stalwart on the James Street precinct for many years, Jocelyn’s Provisions is the go-to for many of Brisbane’s serious food lovers. The shop is always bustling and busy and the lines of salivating shoppers gets very long around this time of year. When you enter the store, you are greeted by walls of handmade artisan jams, spreads, pickles, relishes, syrups and sauces, as well as cake cabinets and bread shelves. Stop drooling long enough to make your selection – choose from Christmas cakes, plum puddings, Stollen, Jewel Bars and mince pies. There is also a range of trifles, tarts, roulades and pavlova shells. There is also a delish list of savoury options to make any meal – or you could just turn up to your relative’s house with a Jocelyn’s Provisions hand-packed hamper and they will love you forever. Christmas orders close on December 19 but the store is open until 4pm on Christmas Eve for last minute necessities.

Judy C Cakes
From apprentice hairdresser to cake creator extraordinaire, Judy Cook from Judy C Cakes has truly found her calling. If you’re looking for mouthwatering sweet Christmas treats, this is the place to go. Her cake cabinets are always stocked full of delightful and decadent desserts and the choice is extensive. Look out for her Rocky Road and White Christmas squares, (sold individually or gift wrapped), the gluten free Fruit & Nut Bar cake, sugar plums, gingerbread houses, traditional Christmas Puddings, and the vanilla snowflake Christmas cupcakes. To make it even easier you can order online until Thursday December 19. The shop will be closing on December 23 so make sure you stock up on all your favourites before then.

Chester Street: Bakery and Bar
Known for delicious desserts always on display at the counter, Chester Street have delved into the world of festive baking and this year are offering up Christmas cakes and puddings. Leaning towards a more traditional recipe, the cakes and puddings are flavoured with traditional brandy and filled with dried fruit. The festive puddings are currently available in-store for $69 or you can also phone an order through. Not a pudding lover? Then consider pre-ordering one of their decadent cakes, cheesecakes, pavlovas or tarts from the menu. And it’s good for last minute purchases as they only need 48 hours’ notice. The team at Chester Street are open until Christmas Eve and also on Boxing Day if you are still experiencing Christmas food cravings.

Jan Power’s Farmers Markets
If you want the freshest produce, directly from local food producers and growers, then one of the Jan Power’s Farmers Markets is the best choice for you. With almost every type of food imaginable on offer, make sure you take something to carry it all home in (we recommend one of those bags on wheels, and some ice packs to keep everything cold too). There will be fruits and vegetables, fresh flowers, artisan breads, high quality meats, fish, poultry and homemade pickles, relishes and sauces. Many stall holders will be offering food specifically made for Christmas events and festive meals so go there with an open mind and buy what smells the most appealing – let your nose be your guide. Also, it’s also the perfect place to grab last-minute Christmas gifts too.

If you want to remain disciplined with your food choices this festive season, Primal Pantry is offering lots of paleo options including meals, sweet treats, and hot and cold drinks. They pride themselves on only selling meats that are 100% grass-fed and products that are gluten-free, organic and free of highly-refined or processed ingredients. Plus all the food on offer is created from scratch, and they encourage you to do the same with recipe cards and a grocery section included on-site. For Christmas this year, the Primal Pantry team have Paleo fruit mince tarts, Paleo Christmas cake with fresh berries, pancetta, cardamom and range-stuffed duck featuring in fresh salads from the cabinet, and choc berry bliss balls – mouthwatering and actually good for you.

Gambaro Seafood Restaurant
Synonymous with seafood, Gambaro’s has always been many people’s first pick for their Christmas lunch. If you want to recreate this experience at home, you can place an order and whip up an amazing seafood spread yourself. Recently awarded QLD Winner – Seafood Restaurant – Formal at the 2014 Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering Awards, you know that when you order from here, you will get the best quality seafood possible. The list includes ocean king prawns, sand crab, smoked salmon, fresh Barra fillets, fresh salmon fillets, fresh Snapper fillets, Sydney Rock and Tasmanian oysters and bugs and lobsters.

Black Pearl Epicure
The place to go when you want premium produce especially if you have a hankering for caviar, as that is their specialty. Babak Hadi founded Black Pearl Caviar in 1990 but was forced to change the name because of a government ban on the importation of caviar. The ban eventually lifted but the new name stuck. Offering both Australian produce and imported delicacies, stop by for such delicacies including truffles, foie gras, artisan chocolate and confections, cheese, oils and vinegars. If you’re looking for high quality dairy products, the list here includes lescure butter, créme fraiche, marscapone and sheep’s milk yoghurt and if you are in need of some more obscure meats such as quail, pheasant, guinea fowl, wood pigeon, or crocodile, saucisson sec and boudin noir, stop in here stat.

Sherwood Rd Organic Meats
If you want to shop local, then this should be your first stop for meat and poultry as Sherwood Rd Organic Meats are super selective about what they sell and know all their farmers and producers personally. In fact, all meat comes from local farms and the owners pride themselves on this approach. For Christmas, choose from a high quality range of offerings so good that the geese and ducks have already sold out! You can still get your hands on nitrate-free hams which have been smoked in-store, organic free-range turkeys and mutton hams, a popular alternative to your traditional ham and appealing to older generations as it is reminiscent of Christmas feasts from their childhood. The mutton ham is cured in-store and cooked in just same way as ham. At this stage, they are still taking orders for the turkeys, hams and mutton hams and there is also a paleo stuffing option available as well.

From the start, Sourced Grocer has always been focused on offering unique, unusual and high quality food and produce for Brisbane locals. Even though they have expanded their cafe out into more of the store’s space, what is available in the fresh food section is still divine, delectable and a little bit decadent. For Christmas, the Sourced Grocer team are selling beautiful boxes of cherries and colourful trays of mangoes and stonefruit. They have stocked Il Migliore Christmas cakes and Christmas puddings and cakes by Diana (a baker extraordinaire from Toowoomba), artisanal breads from Levain (cut-off date to order this is 22 December) and pastries from Crust & Co. (cut-off order date 19 December). There is Gundowring ice cream in Christmas flavours including plum pudding and brandy custard and they will also be making bespoke hampers to order, right up to Christmas, while Brooke, one of their staff, will be making fresh native wreaths for $90 with whatever flowers you want. They close on 24 December at 4pm so make sure you get in there before then and stock up on summery treats.

Vanilla Pod Cake & Deli Café
With almost ten years of experience serving customers delicious cakes and desserts, it’s no surprise that Vanilla Pod is an excellent choice for your Christmas goodies. The team are seriously passionate about all things food, and the list of what they offer is extensive – you’ll have a terrible time deciding because you’ll want to order it all. Don’t forget to consider the Christmas Day Salad Boxes and Edible Table Centrepieces, both magical time-savers that not only look amazing but also taste even better. There’s also ‘Pudding in a Jar’, Vanilla Pod’s famous Christmas pudding served in a one-litre mason jar – they recommend putting it with their new salted caramel sauce. There are also gingerbread trees and houses, Christmas fruit cakes and slices and puddings. If you want items pre-packaged, choose the Christmas Day Gourmet Food Box or the Deluxe Christmas Day Gourmet Food Hamper. Our absolute favourite is the Reindeer Food Jar – Christmas Porridge sold in a mason jar. Your kids will be gobbling it up faster than you can say ‘ho ho ho’.

Heinz Butcher Shop
This little local butcher goes above and beyond for their customers and the quality of their meat is untouchable. Open since 1983, this grandpa of the Brisbane foodie scene knows what they’re doing. If you are a lover of smoked goods, then go nowhere else but here. And their other specialties include traditional German products, game meats and both fresh and cooked gourmet sausages. They also sell delicious and unusual international sauces and condiments. And if you can’t make it there between store hours, they invite you to contact them and they will do their best to arrange a time that works for you. How generous and unexpected is that?
