The food truck phenomenon has exploded! Every Friday, we take a closer look at one of your favourite food trucks — today, the spotlight falls on Mr America Hotdogs and Fries.

Owner/Chef: Simon Darraugh

Cuisine style: American street food

Home suburb: Gold Coast

Years in business: 2 years

Why food trucks?

Why not! I got my inspiration from the LA food trucks. I wanted to do something fun and cool. I love hotdogs and the passion and fun has grown into a business which we love.

What were you doing before you got your food truck? What’s your background in food?

That’s a good question. I always had a passion for cooking and got that from my mum and grandmother. Both really good cooks! I am a Project Manager and Sales Excutive by trade, I saw an opportunity and haven’t looked back.

What’s the most popular item on your menu?

We are old school, our dogs are traditional in a way… “The Yankee” is popular with all ages. It’s a freshly steamed bun and steamed frankfurt, lovingly topped with ketchup and yellow American mustard! Also the “Sweet Relish Dog” freshly steamed bum. Steamed frankfurt, melted grated cheese, lovingly topped with sweet tomato relish, ketchup and American yellow mustard.

What’s your favourite item on the menu?

I am old school, I like mine simple…The Yankee!

Which suburbs do you usually operate in? Where’s your most popular stop?

You can find us on the Where The Truck app. We’re at most major events and festivals in Brisbane and Gold Coast. You can see where we are on our Facebook page.

How do most people find out about your truck?

We do a lot of festivals and events, but Where The Truck is a great app to find not only us, but other cool food trucks around Brisbane and Australia.

Why do you think food trucks have become so popular?

I think it’s because they are different and unique. You can really put your personality into creating a food truck and I think people see that in the way your truck / trailer looks as well as the passion and love that goes into your food.

Favourite music to listen to in the truck?

Just looking through my iPhone… Fat Joe, a bit of Nelly and Stafford Brothers…

Do you harbour any dreams of opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant?

The idea has crossed my mind. Our customers lead us… if they want us to, then we will go down that path. At present we have Mr America Snr and Mr America Jnr, an original New York Street cart from Manhattan. This cart is seriously cool!

If your Food Truck was a Transformer, its name would be…

Hotdogz!

Where can we find you over the next few weeks?

Icon Kids @ Robelle Park, Springfield — Saturday September 27
