The food truck phenomenon has exploded in Brisbane! Every Friday, we’ll be taking a closer look at one of your favourite food trucks — today, the spotlight falls on Pizzantica.

Owner/Chef: Luca Ferone

Cuisine style: Italian – Napoli-style inspired pizza.

Years in business: Fully operational for a little over six months, but several years of passion in the making.

Why food trucks?

Quality, service, convenience for the customer. The Pizzantica Van was designed to bring to our customers restaurant-style Italian food and service (pizza at the moment) to their private events at work, home, school fetes, markets and festivals.

What were you doing before you got your food truck?

Chef at Gusto Da Gianni Restaurant in Portside, Hamilton.

What’s your background in food?

Always been in hospitality. Graduated in Australia as cook, pastry cook and hospitality manager. Been barman, waiter, and now chef and very creatively building my business to bring food excellence to my Brisbane amici (friends) — we consider and treat our customers as friends!

What’s the most popular item on your menu?

Our amici love all of our pizzas; they’re all unique and irresistible. That said, the calzone dessert is a must try!

What’s your favourite item on the menu?

A tough question — so many great flavours to choose from, but if I have to, I’d say the Pizza Alle Patate (potato, ham, brown onion, rosemary and mozzarella).

Which suburbs do you usually operate in?

We operate throughout the greater Brisbane area, with our markets concentrated in Hawthorne, Coorparoo, West End, Ascot.

Where’s your most popular stop?

Another tough one. We enjoy serving all of our amici throughout Brisbane, but we have a special spot for the folks at Hawthorne, probably because that’s where our roots are. We started out in Hawthorne!

How do most people find out about your truck?

Word of mouth recommendations, social media (Facebook), our website, and talking with us at the markets.

Why do you think food trucks have become so popular?

Great value for money, and you meet the chefs, something that is difficult to do in a restaurant.

Favourite music to listen to in the truck?

Radio Nova 106.9.

Do you harbour any dreams of opening a brick-and-mortar restaurant?

We have great plans for Pizzantica and what we will be bringing to our amici, so keep an eye on what’s coming on our Facebook page — exciting and different, something I think Brisbane will embrace.

If your Food Truck was a Transformer, its name would be…

The Pizza Kombi.
