Celebrity chef Ben O’Donoghue wins the race with Billykart Kitchen, a new cafe in Annerley’s historic Clifton Hill.
Replacing a corner store (the old sign hangs above the vertical garden out the back), Billykart Kitchen offers locals a new venue for breakfast, lunch and killer coffee.
With a communal bench adding old-school charm, the interior colour choices of lime, lemon and teal contribute to a light, citrus aesthetic.
O’Donoghue is the co-author of cookbook Surfing the Menu and stars in the television series of the same name with Curtis Stone. He runs the cafe with wife Dee.
“Cooking for me is a passion and a reflex, it’s something I’ve done since childhood and it never ceases to give pleasure or stimulate my imagination,” says O’Donoghue.
The fare at Billykart is sophisticated but casual, with a focus on seasonal, local produce. Keeping true to the convenience store roots, diners can also pick up a loaf of fresh bread, milk or a paper from the cafe. Billykart Kitchen is also open for dinner Friday nights.
So head in for brunch with a little taste of celebrity in Annerley…
