Nundah residents, prepare your taste buds for a traditional slice of Germany.

On 22 November the new King of Cakes store is set to open on Aspinall Street and Station Road and will be serving up all sorts of German goodies.

If you’re hankering for something sweet, try an almond croissant, apple plunder, Esterhazy slice or Gugelhupf or the famous Black Forest cake. Looking for something more savoury? Try a cheese Kransky, goulash pie or a German hot dog.

The original King of Cakes store was opened in 1990 in Taringa by Wolfgang Kelke, whose passion for pastries took him from the family café business in Munich to Executive Pastry Chef for Movenpik and eventually across the seas to Australian shores.

All King of Cakes stores use traditional techniques and recipes under Kelke’s direction, and are still the only stores in Brisbane that make their own pretzels.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will officially open the store, which is the third store in Brisbane and the first to be offered as a franchise.

“In recent months I’ve had a stream of enquiries about franchising King of Cakes and after researching my options, found that it was the right time offer a franchise opportunity,” says Kelke.

“My aim is to have eight stores across Brisbane and the Gold Coast and even though the new stores will be franchised, the quality of the cakes and breads will stay the same. Everything in a store is unique to King of Cakes and everything is authentic.”

Each store features authentic German trimmings and genuine Bavarian atmosphere. Also on offer are German mustards, chocolates, cold cuts, breads and specialty cakes, so head on down next time you’re craving a taste of the Germanic.

Master Chef Wolfgang Kelke uses traditional artisan baking techniques which include baking in stone ovens. He adds his own secret blend of spices to recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation that will entice your tastebuds and invigorate you soul.
