Con Dapontes was born into fish. Growing up on the island of Kythera in Greece, Con worked as a fish monger with his father and grandfather.

A haven for beach-going holiday-makers, scenic Kythera has a small but productive group of local fish mongers who supply the island’s taverns with daily fresh fish.

It was here that Dapontes learnt the traditional methods (local men fish by net, long line, pole-and-line and harpooning) before moving to Australia in 1963.

He kick-started his Australian dream with a seafood and takeaway shop in Fortitude Valley before finding himself a job at the Brisbane Fish Market where he would fillet fish all day long.

“Over the years my priorities with the business began to change,” says Dapontes.

Recently opening his dream shop at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre’s new food precinct, Dapontes says he now focuses his goals on building a future for his family.

“Since my first store opened in 1979, my goal has been to open a shop at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre.

“When the opportunity was presented to me based on my fresh seafood offering and successful business model, it was like a dream come true.

“Now I am focused on teaching my children all about the seafood industry so my knowledge can be passed down to the next generation,” he says.

“I am so proud of building a successful business for my family.”
