Italians are serious about their food! For Italians food is not merely a means for survival, it is part of Italy’s history and culture, and enjoying a meal with friends or family is the main ingredient of any Italian dish.

Eating together is a favourite pastime and all about joy and tradition. The culture of Italian food is relaxed, slow-paced and based around the family.
Colle Rosso is a family restaurant, owned by two couples, David and Laura (both from Rome) and Marco (from Sardinia) and Lisa (from Brisbane), who have more than 30 years of experience between them in European and Australian hospitality.

Colle Rosso is Italian for “red hill” and is a classic little piece of Italy in Red Hill, just minutes from Brisbane’s CBD. A traditional family trattoria serving home-made pizzas, pasta and Italian classics.

We stared our meal by sharing Classica Bruschetta ($8), an Antipasto Italiana platter ($20) and Fritto Misto ($18). An excellent range of home-made pasta includes Ravioli di Osso Bucco, filled with veal osso bucco in a saffron creamy sauce with peas. The menu includes 12 different pizzas from a simple Margherita ($16) to a classic filled Calzone ($24), all made on a fresh crispy home-made base with classic Italian toppings. Both pasta and pizzas are also available gluten-free.

Main courses include a chicken Scaloppini Parmigiana ($28), a classic veal Saltimbocca alla Romana ($29) as well as grilled eye fillet ($35) and Atlantic salmon with lemon and dill ($30). The blackboard specials change daily; we had the Coda alla Vaccinara ($35) – a veal “oxtail” slow-cooked in a rich aromatic tomato sauce, served on mashed potatoes – tender, rich and full of flavour.

There is a good range of homemade desserts including a very rich Tiramisu made with Nutella ($12) and Torta della Nonna ($14) – a traditional lemon tart made to an old family recipe.

David and Marco are in the kitchen while Laura and Lisa oversee the dining room, which features exposed timber beams and red painted walls with pictures of Italy. The hard surfaces can be a little noisy but the atmosphere is fun and family-friendly with excellent and attentive service. A comprehensive wine list includes several excellent local and Italian wines by the glass. Colle Rosso provides an authentic family Italian experience.
