Did you know that spaghetti bolognese is reported to be the most popular kids meal in Australia – both at home and in restaurants?

Australia’s cultural diversity has given us a wide and varied cuisine. We are lucky to enjoy dishes from all around the world, many of which we call our own. The Italian influence is significant with pasta and pizza being a staple. Italian food suits our climate and lifestyle – and it is very sociable, able to be shared and encouraging families and friends eating together at the same table. Il Posto translates as “The Place”.

Popular with locals and regulars, Il Posto is certainly The Place for authentic artisan pizza and fresh pasta. Il Posto has a choice of indoor or al fresco
outdoor dining – and a well-stocked bar with a great selection of Italian wines and beers. An old-fashioned hand-operated ham slicer takes pride of place in the dining room next to the open kitchen. This is a little piece of Italy in Paddington.

For starters you can share an antipasto with freshly shaved Parma ham ($23.50) or tender floured and seasoned calamari ($18.50). I chose the Pappardelle all’anatra ($25.50) for my main – fresh al dente ribbon pasta with a duck and porcini mushroom ragu sauce, generous and full of flavour. My partner chose the Prosciutto di Parma pizza – a fabulous pizza base both soft and crispy, with freshly shaved prosciutto ham, bocconcini, tomato and basil ($23) – although the extra $1.50 for a few requested rocket leaves was a bit cheeky!

We washed it down with a rich and fruity Valpolicella red wine from Veneto in Northern Italy ($13.50). For dessert there’s a classic fresh hand-made tiramisu ($10) or a pannacotta – we shared a “special” Italian Bread and Butter pudding ($13.50), rich with chocolate and citrus flavours but a bit dry, served with a fabulous artisan vanilla ice cream.

The service at Il Posto is fast but friendly – very Italian. Locals pop in for a drink at the bar or a plate of pasta and glass of wine. Business-types tarry longer over excellent mains, including the special organic lamb cutlets with zucchini, garlic and chilli salsa and a mint pesto. The menu includes classic Italian dishes combined with modern interpretations in a home-style Italian atmosphere. A classic Italian eatery worth a visit.
